Just when we thought it couldn’t get worse…

With every NFL team in every NFL season, injuries happen. It’s a part of the game. The good teams learn how to deal with those injuries, make adjustments, and continue on their march towards the playoffs as if nothing happened.

But, what is a team to do when the solution to the injury problem finds himself injured? That’s the dilemma that’s facing the Panthers today, as it has been reported that DT Louis Leonard has suffered a broken ankle in yesterday’s loss to the Falcons.

Leonard was the Panthers’ back up plan when starting DT Ma’ake Kemoeatu went down on the first day of training camp with an achilles injury. They don’t have any depth at the position, so they had to make a trade with Cleveland to acquire Leonard in order to have a warm body to occupy space (and his 300+ lb. frame did a good job at that).

According to initial reports, it appears that Leonard will be heading to the IR list, ending his season with the Panthers after just two regular season games. We will never know whether or not he would have filled the shoes of Kemoeatu now, and at this point we don’t even know how the Panthers plan to replace him.

As of right now the only other DT’s the Panthers have on the roster are Nick Hayden, Damione Lewis, and Ra’Shon Harris – not exactly a Pro Bowl trio of linemen.

Will the Panthers scour the free agent market and sign someone who couldn’t catch on with anyone else? Or will Fox go with what he has and pray for the best? Stay tuned over the next few days to find out.
