The Panthers will not franchise Peppers

According to the team’s Twitter page, GM Marty Hurney announced today that the franchise tag will not be applied to DE Julius Peppers. Franchising him would cost the team more than $20M this season, and Peppers was apparently unwilling to sign a long term deal (at least that’s what his agent said).

With this move, Peppers will become an unrestricted free agent and will go to the highest bidder (or whichever team offers him money – whatever the case may be). The Panthers are not expected to offer him a contract.

Hurney also announced that both DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart had successful surgeries, but it is not known if they will be available for mini-camp.

Too bad they couldn’t have traded him. That would have been the prudent thing to do.

Yeah, they tried that last year but he cry-babied the whole offseason and refused to sign the tender until right before training camp. By then, it was too late to trade him. And this season his stupid agent came out and said they wouldn’t sign long-term, killing any chance of a trade because any team with common sense won’t trade for a guy they can pick up in free agency.

I blame his agent more than anything – he shouldn’t have told the media that there was no intent to sign long term. Then, they could have at least worked out a sign and trade to allow the Panthers to get something in return – it was the least Peppers and his agent could do, but instead they went the douchebag route. I’m sure karma will have something to say about it.

I will hold my laughter until he only signs for 1/3 of the price he wants and winds up in Oakland or Cleveland, where he will probably never sniff the playoffs again.
