The cuts keep coming

Jerry Richardson must be doing some serious spring cleaning, as three more players have been cut from the roster today.

So far, the list of released players includes:

Jake Delhomme – QB
Damione Lewis – DT
Ma’ake Kemoeatu – DT
Landon Johnson – LB
Na’il Diggs – LB

I have no idea who else will be cut, if any one is cut, or what the reasons (other than money) behind these cuts are. But right now, it looks like if you are a Panthers’ seasoned veteran making more than the minimum salary, your job is in danger of being taken away. I knew the front office wanted to go younger, but I didn’t expect this.

More to come later as the day unfolds and more moves are revealed.

How happy were you when Delhomme was finally let go?? You’re right though, I didn’t expect so many defensive guys to be released. Steve Smith could pull a TO next season if Moore isn’t effective.

      Honestly, I wasn’t happy. I’ll explain…

I feel like Travis Coates in Old Yeller. I know it had to be done. It was time. Jake was getting old and just didn’t have it anymore – his arm troubles were too prevalent to make him an effective starter again (his “rabies” you could call it).

Knowing this, I still feel bad for the guy, because he is one of the classiest players in the NFL. Fans love the guy. He’s a great off-field person, a great locker room presence, and a great example for kids. But, at the end of the day, he’s just not a great quarterback anymore, if he ever was “great” to begin with.

So, even though he needed to go and his time is over, it still hurts a little that his time is gone.

As for Steve Smith: he’s probably the most mis-understood player in the game. He’s passionate, but he’s not a diva like T.O. and the others. He wants to win more than anything, and he’s willing to take a side seat to another WR if it means improving the roster. He’s already said that the team needs to draft “the next me” – so he’s ready to win, and I think he has all the confidence in the world in Moore. (At least that’s the way he is to fans, he could be the biggest diva of them all in secret, but I’ve never seen any trace of it.)

I guess you’re right about Smith, from what I’ve read in the media about him he’s all about himself and his stats. Good to hear he’s a team guy, we need more of those.

I hear you about Jake. I sort of went through that when the Cowboys cut ties with Emmitt Smith. I think he was “great” for a few years, which is more than more QBs can say (ie, Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, Tim Couch, etc).

        Have a good weekend man

Yeah – the “he only cares about himself and his stats” isn’t true, and I hate it when the media does that to the good guys who actually care about the team.

You’re right about Delhomme – he was good for 5 of the 7 years he was here (missed majority of ’07 due to surgery and was terrible in ’09), which is way more than Leaf, Smith, Couch, et al. can say about their careers (or lack thereof).

Hope you have a good weekend too man.
