Gilyard’s Pro Day a success

I’ve been saying for quite some time now that I want the Panthers to draft WR Mardy Gilyard if he’s still on the board when the #47 pick comes due. (I really believe he will be – simply because the WR class is so deep this year. There are several receivers that could be taken before Gilyard, and there aren’t that many teams who are looking for a receiver.)

Anyway, the bloggers over at Cincy Jungle posted a great article about Gilyard’s performance at his Pro Day.

The assessment of Gilyard’s performance was simple, stating that he improved on his 40-time,stating:

Gilyard … improved his 40-time from 4.56 to 4.47 and made a few nice grabs.

His 40-time at the NFL Combine wasn’t horrible by any means, but it is nice to know that he had a better one at his Pro Day. Of course this could spell doom for my hopes of the Panthers drafting him, because this could also increase the interest in him from other teams in the league who have picks before Carolina in the 2nd round. (I really don’t think he will go in the 1st round – there are just too many other highly touted players at other positions.)

At the end of the article, it is mentioned that the Bengals are interested in drafting the former Cincinnati Bearcat, though I believe this was written before the Bengals signed free agent receiver Antonio Bryant. Now that they have added Bryant to their roster, they may not be in the market to draft a receiver until the later rounds in the draft.

I really hope the Panthers can get this guy – he would be an upgrade to the return game, and he could be a deadly weapon in the slot with his speed and ability to create separation from defenders.

I just hope no other teams were paying that much attention to him when he was working out, though I doubt that is possible. It’s hard not to notice what could be the next big time WR in the league.
